eagle without head the rush hour traffic crawls the sun slowly melts the frost the morning news is ugly a nation mourns its loss seagulls hover over seeded fields white jet smoke designs the sky cigarette clouds fill the room and swim into sunlight i couldn’t move so i slept instead i couldn’t follow the dream that was being led by an eagle without head an eagle without head medicine moves through the city none of our bridges are strong the polls of popular opinion agree that nothing is wrong the chalice is raised at the altar the next generation lines up to find that nothing is left them those before them had taken too much the pipe light is bleeding red the sundogs are roaming free the servants all bow before the dust from the rosary bead while the sunset sinks into the water the bird fights the gravity the bird fights the gravity i fight the gravity i couldn’t move so i slept instead i couldn’t follow the dream that was being led by an eagle without head an eagle without head

poem 04:32
poem didn’t want to go didn’t want to be blown away was still too far gone was still raw and needing song took the subway from midtown where the crowds looked like they were doing ok got off near varick street to look for my brother but he had already left so i walked south less cars every block less people then no cars and no noise but smoke and ash were wrapping round my head chunk of concrete in my eye sad police an asian woman brought them drinks it was so quiet as we looked down streets blocked off with yellow tape we looked for the buildings that weren’t there every angle that we could we searched for what we lost all the crazy new yorkers were so polite and reverent as we watched the fires still burn the stench of collapse we signed the banner at saint pauls the little church that stood paying respects to our lost ones then we made our way uptown had a drink and then had dinner and started smiling again and by the time we neared the garden we were laughing then we saw the firehouse and everyone just stopped there were candles, flags and photographs of the heroes that they lost so we just looked into that other reality and then we looked for song

in the car that could fly and swim picture this my friends i found the power of the pen hidden in our living room behind a character from a cartoon holding a photograph enclosed in glass of a frightened child wearing a gas mask let the journey begin in the car that could fly and swim holy ,holy, holy day a crayon, a flag and a time delay one potato, two potato, three potato, four the pig at the feast of a television war at the black stone in mecca the joint chiefs of staff put a dirty band aid on a tiny little scratch the radio dial spins in the car that could fly and swim swallow this and wash it down there’s a dense fog rolling through your town a mousetrap, casinos, a remote control and a new pair of earrings that somebody stole state your reply into the microphone and leave a message at the sound of the tone the outlook is grim in the car that could fly and swim now that we’re almost here at ground zero let’s once again make nixon a hero a candle, a ribbon and a mile of red tape a package of mercy and a route of escape if you believe what you hear then open your throat the bad guys will win while the rest of us float let’s let everybody in to the car that could fly and swim

in the life of… i walked in on the middle of a story about a silent man who grabbed the ring i never heard a sadder sound no one was around this is what i found he just exploded in the dark he hadn’t noticed all of those he loved a crowd had gathered outside his home they said he lived alone the glass was shattered by a stone they made a film out of the story the pentagon had won another war no one could look at it too hard the bombs were tiny stars i cut the flowers from the yard to place inside your head out of time out of work moved my head away from the hurt i drank it down and walked upstairs and moved the chairs and left the house with flapping coat and flying hat when that was this and this was that someone was talking and passing a pipe i inhaled moving into the light and so now we’re at the end of the story now we know how much to care when someone’s on their own every power broke apart every lover leaves their mark i gathered fallen hearts to place inside your head

the future 06:19
the future i easy see the future see it with my eyes closed oh no my eyes were open still i saw it like an thick road and i saw it like a thin street full of flags and marching feet from the deep end to the dry spot to the fifth point where we now meet there were seven years of seven sad songs now there will be eight years of everything else in the future this museum will be pummeled into powder and everyone will be signing up for the honest army hour when i easy see the future i see the satellites will fall and all of us who ran with ease now will be forced to crawl i tried to rhyme money and love but there was just no line that would measure up in the future they’ll take the tooth of a shark and plunge it right into the last poets heart in the future all that blossoms from the mouths of entertainers will be the stone of the spoken word and then the sound of newer danger these things come from someplace else i could never make them up myself i easy see the future when we fall into a trance and we do it without money or drink or drug or dance and two parades on thin streets will no longer squeeze on through they’ll mingle with each other and become something new you could have been the beatles now you’re only old magnetic i easy see the future i think I’m going to get it

about

we had the tv on in the studio while we recorded the first album. and it was kept on a cable news channel. it was war in iraq for 24 hours a day. while i was recording this happy album about how beautiful life is, our warriors were losing their lives. or becoming gravely injured. so i started writing songs. and i started with 9/11 since that had been the excuse to invade iraq. it ended up including the school shootings that have become epidemic since there was one that occurred during a session. that time we couldn't keep recording and the sound was turned up. the bush years ended up being horrible for this country. what was done to our warriors was obscene. yet the album ends on a hopeful note. in fact it was the myspace days and a lot of people used the last song, wake up, as their profile song during the election. and that made me happy. so did the woman who contacted us to say she listened to the whole thing and just cried as the album ended with the national anthem. she explained her son returned from war suffering from ptsd. so if it helped her at all the album is a success. the album is for our brave warriors who were lied to and suffered because of those lies. and it''s for the american people, who are good and hard working and expect our politicians to be the same. may one day the country really live up to it''s promise. may one day justice will be perfect. may one day no one will feel the need to write an album like this. may peace and love win
