eagle without head
06:00
|
|||
eagle without head
the rush hour traffic crawls
the sun slowly melts the frost
the morning news is ugly
a nation mourns its loss
seagulls hover over seeded fields
white jet smoke designs the sky
cigarette clouds fill the room
and swim into sunlight
i couldn’t move so i slept instead
i couldn’t follow the dream that was being led
by an eagle without head
an eagle without head
medicine moves through the city
none of our bridges are strong
the polls of popular opinion
agree that nothing is wrong
the chalice is raised at the altar
the next generation lines up
to find that nothing is left them
those before them had taken too much
the pipe light is bleeding red
the sundogs are roaming free
the servants all bow before
the dust from the rosary bead
while the sunset sinks into the water
the bird fights the gravity
the bird fights the gravity
i fight the gravity
i couldn’t move so i slept instead
i couldn’t follow the dream that was being led
by an eagle without head
an eagle without head

the towers
02:26
|
|||
the towers
the towers have fallen
no one is safe
it was only illusion
that we had made
and the cell phones are busy
the roads have been closed
the last flight has left
and there’s ash on your clothes
the boy found you blinded
walking the streets
and used the church holy water
so you can now see
the masses are moving
across the bridge
the golden age is over
this is how we live
go tell the others
what you have seen
the towers have fallen
they were only a dream

don’t forget me 1
don’t forget me
i was there
i was running
down the stairs
but i stopped to give
somebody help
everyone was helping
everybody else
and then destruction
was everywhere
don’t forget me
i was there

poem

|

poem
didn’t want to go
didn’t want to be blown away
was still too far gone
was still raw and needing song
took the subway from midtown
where the crowds looked like
they were doing ok
got off near varick street
to look for my brother
but he had already left
so i walked south
less cars every block
less people
then no cars
and no noise
but smoke and ash
were wrapping round my head
chunk of concrete in my eye
sad police
an asian woman brought them drinks
it was so quiet
as we looked down streets
blocked off with yellow tape
we looked for the buildings
that weren’t there
every angle that we could
we searched for what we lost
all the crazy new yorkers
were so polite and reverent
as we watched the fires still burn
the stench of collapse
we signed the banner at saint pauls
the little church that stood
paying respects to our lost ones
then we made our way uptown
had a drink and then had dinner
and started smiling again
and by the time we neared the garden
we were laughing
then we saw the firehouse
and everyone just stopped
there were candles, flags and photographs
of the heroes that they lost
so we just looked into that other reality
and then we looked
for song

in the car that could fly and swim
picture this my friends
i found the power of the pen
hidden in our living room
behind a character from a cartoon
holding a photograph enclosed in glass
of a frightened child wearing a gas mask
let the journey begin
in the car that could fly and swim
holy ,holy, holy day
a crayon, a flag and a time delay
one potato, two potato, three potato, four
the pig at the feast of a television war
at the black stone in mecca
the joint chiefs of staff
put a dirty band aid on a tiny little scratch
the radio dial spins
in the car that could fly and swim
swallow this and wash it down
there’s a dense fog rolling through your town
a mousetrap, casinos, a remote control
and a new pair of earrings that somebody stole
state your reply into the microphone
and leave a message at the sound of the tone
the outlook is grim
in the car that could fly and swim
now that we’re almost here at ground zero
let’s once again make nixon a hero
a candle, a ribbon and a mile of red tape
a package of mercy and a route of escape
if you believe what you hear then open your throat
the bad guys will win while the rest of us float
let’s let everybody in
to the car that could fly and swim

lies
05:08
|
|||
lies
i’ll never be that brave
and you’ll never be that brave
as all those heroic kids
you ordered to an early grave
our religious nuts
are like their religious nuts
they take a knife to the truth
to see how far it cuts
lies on ancient parchment paper
lies on new computer chips
lies that guide the laser bombers
lies to a direct hit
our kids kill their kids
and their kids kill ours
they’re ordered to by stupid men
bathing in the mud of power
it’s the end game baby
it’s the end game right
mindless leaders lacking soul
don’t value any life
lies on ancient parchment paper
lies on new computer chips
lies that guide the laser bombers
lies to a direct hit

don't forget me 2
02:40
|

don’t forget me 2
don’t forget me
i was there
running through the
burning desert air
but we were ambushed in babylon
the armor couldn’t take
the force of the bomb
and the metal fragments
flew everywhere
don’t forget me
i was there

chemicals
02:52
|
|||
chemicals
we’re worried about the chemicals
heroin or anthrax
the poison’s in our streets
cash for one
funds the other
the chemicals meet
the reactions horrible
or the reactions sweet
we’re worried about the chemicals
poppy’s from the mountains
powder on the streets

studying the prophecies
05:28
|
|||
studying the prophecies
brightly painted graffiti words
boldly announce the church is dead
hidden meanings on lyric sheets
this is how the truth is spread
i wished for the holy guiding light
but settled for the tv news
where all were claiming divine right
to spread their god given views
fools studying the prophecies
tear at the fabric of faith
everybody cast the first stone
everybody found a reason to hate
splintered stained glass on cement
there’s false idols telling lies
judgement day’s already passed
god has closed his eyes
crescent, star or cross divide us
we are lost
the promised land is shattered
heaven’s boundaries have been crossed
fools studying the prophecies
tear at the fabric of faith
everybody cast the first stone
everybody found a reason to hate

speed of light
05:09
|
|||
speed of light
i’m moving at the speed of light
and yet I’m standing still
got to find a way to use
all of this free will
there’s chaos in accounting firms
the lawyers have moved in
is anyone out there worried
that the terrorists will win
cause they don’t believe in dow jones
they don’t believe in us
they can strap a bomb around their waist
before they board the bus
there’s a mass that’s deep inside me
there’s all that energy that’s out
i think i’d join the human race
if i knew what it was about
there’s those out there that really feel
that greed’s a better high
they only use the other shit
to make the day go by
and then no one needs a soul mate
no one needs a friend
you’d never find out the limit
of what the lobbyist will spend
the protesters are gathering
for another waste of time
i’d like to join the movement
if i had an issue that was mine
if god himself was speaking
would anyone really hear
or would they just start talking louder
so their point was really clear
but i’ve really got to wonder
if we live in the middle of hate
how can we save for the future
and keep the children safe
if we don’t open the envelope
to tell everyone who wins
should we shut off the commercial
before it even begins
can a rock star really lead us
can a corporate ceo
can you find the real ecstasy
if you find where the money goes
does sex and strength and beauty
really leave us in the end
is salvation just before me
or have i missed it again

in the life of...
05:53
|
|||
in the life of…
i walked in
on the middle of a story
about a silent man
who grabbed the ring
i never heard a sadder sound
no one was around
this is what i found
he just exploded in the dark
he hadn’t noticed all of those he loved
a crowd had gathered outside his home
they said he lived alone
the glass was shattered by a stone
they made a film out of the story
the pentagon had won another war
no one could look at it too hard
the bombs were tiny stars
i cut the flowers from the yard
to place inside your head
out of time
out of work
moved my head away
from the hurt
i drank it down and walked upstairs
and moved the chairs and left the house
with flapping coat and flying hat
when that was this and this was that
someone was talking and passing a pipe
i inhaled moving into the light
and so now
we’re at the end of the story
now we know how much to care
when someone’s on their own
every power broke apart
every lover leaves their mark
i gathered fallen hearts
to place inside
your head

don’t forget me 3
don’t forget me
i was there
suddenly the water
was everywhere
i tried to get to
higher ground
but there was no dry land
to be found
i tried to find
someplace with air
don’t forget me
i was there

a death in town
02:47
|
|||
a death in town
when you
looked most like
a lion
i danced circles
in a rage
like hitler
on the warpath
like jagger
on the stage
the phonograph always
played
we drank the words
off the page
three boys
gather
to watch them dig
a hole
in the ground
there’s been
a death in town

super nothing
04:32
|
|||
super nothing
there’s fields of dirt
that were once amber waves
is this a choirs false note
or the home of the brave
are we just believing in
nothing at all
did you follow history’s guide
to the empires fall
super nothing
king of war
what the hell did you do that for
i dream in poems
i sleep on floors
i admit my mistakes
and don’t do them anymore
the mexican men are muscled
and ready for work
the medicated nation
gives in when it hurts
well i talk to god too
and he says you’re full of shit
you’’ll use him for illusion
but there’s no god in any of it
super nothing
king of war
what the hell did you do that for
i dream in poems
i sleep on floors
i admit my mistakes
and don’t do them anymore
how can we not make
the kids believe
there’s something out there
for them
super nothing
king of war
what the hell did you do that for
i dream in poems
i sleep on floors
i admit my mistakes
and don’t do them anymore

he shot me
he shot everyone

i was there

the future
06:19
|
|||
the future
i easy see the future
see it with my eyes closed
oh no my eyes were open
still i saw it like an thick road
and i saw it like a thin street
full of flags and marching feet
from the deep end to the dry spot
to the fifth point where we now meet
there were seven years of seven sad songs
now there will be eight years
of everything else
in the future this museum
will be pummeled into powder
and everyone will be signing up
for the honest army hour
when i easy see the future
i see the satellites will fall
and all of us who ran with ease
now will be forced to crawl
i tried to rhyme money and love
but there was just no line that would measure up
in the future they’ll take the tooth of a shark
and plunge it right into the last poets heart
in the future all that blossoms
from the mouths of entertainers
will be the stone of the spoken word
and then the sound of newer danger
these things come from someplace else
i could never make them up myself
i easy see the future
when we fall into a trance
and we do it without money
or drink or drug or dance
and two parades on thin streets
will no longer squeeze on through
they’ll mingle with each other
and become something new
you could have been the beatles
now you’re only old magnetic
i easy see the future
i think I’m going to get it

fallen leaf
03:38
|
|||
fallen leaf
old jack with remote control
snow noise on the tv screen
children bike along the path of clouds
a dog barks at the light of dreams
lucy cuts into the perfect pie
a fly lands on a piece of crust
her sister’s got a boy upstairs
their kisses are the love of dust
alice from the bakery
lights a candle at the church
jesus on the corner
tells her what it’s worth
fallen leaf on october ground
is picked up by the wind
a stranger picks up the hands of time
and the kiss of life begins
the barbershop is open still
mister henderson still cuts hair
and that nutty woman talking to herself
says she can’t even feel the air
mittens put on the young ones hands
newspapers of lies are read
when the cold rain starts to fall
people place them on their head
alice from the bakery
lights a candle at the church
jesus on the corner
tells her what it’s worth
fallen leaf on october ground
is picked up by the wind
a stranger picks up the hands of time
and the kiss of life begins

wake up
06:16
|
|||
wake up
wake up sleepy heads
it’s time to change the world
i believe an eye for an eye
just makes everyone blind
i believe justice could be perfect
if we follow it’s flawless design
i believe that children
hate no one when they’re born
i believe if they grow to hate
we’re doing something wrong
i believe that music
can really heal your soul
i believe the human spirit
can be filled to become whole
i believe in action
i believe in work
i believe in respect
i believe we can heal the hurt
i believe in strength
i believe in love
i believe i’m right
i believe in looking up
i believe that poetry
matters now and then
i believe the youth of the world
are about to rise again
i believe in peace
i believe in truth
i believe life
i believe in you
i believe in you
o, say can you see
by the dawn's early light
what so proudly we hailed
at the twilight's last gleaming
whose broad stripes and bright stars
through the perilous fight
o'er the ramparts we watched
were so gallantly streaming
and the rocket's red glare
the bombs bursting in air
gave proof through the night
that our flag was still there
oh say does that star spangled banner yet wave
o'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave
